We’re thrilled to celebrate Maria, writer and director at MaryLuFilms, who just won the Uppsala Short Film Pitch Award 2025 and a 50,000 SEK grant from the Swedish Film Institute for her upcoming short film Gunnar & Greta.

Jury’s Motivation:

“With a poignant framing narrative that opens the door to the sorrow of the past, we are invited to follow a 13-year-old’s exploration of an event that came to shape her entire life. The filmmaker’s pitch and vision genuinely sparked our curiosity and desire to see this film and to witness what might have happened on the fateful day when her grandparents took their own lives.”

Lecture with Billy Mernit, Story Analyst at Universal Pictures, who contributed to developing films like Get Out and Bridesmaids, has read over 15,000 professional scripts. If anyone knows what works on the page, it’s him.
In this lecture, he discusses what’s okay to put in a script, debunking myths like ’avoid writing emotions’ when done with purpose. There’s so much noise about what you can and can’t write, but according to Billy, the best writers break those so-called rules—with intention.
All A-list screenwriters ”direct” on the page. For example, in Get Out, the tension is heightened through subtle descriptions of characters’ expressions and movements, guiding the reader through the emotional beats of the scene. They write emotions and guide the reader through a scene—but they do it with restraint. The goal? Make the reader feel. If the audience connects with the character, all tools are fair game.
One key insight he shared was the importance of knowing the POV character in a scene—the character through whose eyes we experience the moment.

Yesterday, Robert Traczyk, a graduate of our Story Masterclass from Poland, received an award from the Lower Silesia Film Group Foundation for the script Vero and the Robots in the Janusz Łęski competition for children’s and youth scripts.

The jury praised the script for its original and multifaceted storyline, exploring the relationship between humans and technology while delivering a profound message about family, sacrifice, and courage. They highlighted the innovative approach, dynamic narrative, and unique artistic potential, which challenge young viewers to reflect on the modern world.

This past month at Story Academy, we had the privilege of hosting Neil Landau for three sessions over three weeks on writing for TV.

Neil, a renowned screenwriter, producer, and author of The TV Showrunner’s Roadmap, shared his extensive knowledge, built not only on his own industry experience but also through interviews with highly accomplished showrunners like Jesse Armstrong (Succession) while writing his books on TV storytelling.

Hi and Hello!

My name is Ester and this is my first year at Story Academy Sweden!

I have always loved telling stories, from talking my parents ears of when I was a kid to writing my own plays and movie scripts! I’m a theater kid (no surprise) and I used to write my own plays that I made my little brother perform with me!

Here at Fårösund we tell stories every day! Currently we are working on a feature film in groups alongside with developing our own ideas.

The school offer great support for our own projects outside of class! I am currently writing and directing a short series with some friends and we have been able to borrow professional equipment. There’s also amazing support from the other students! 🤩

On calm nights, we can always go down to the dock to watch the stars and sometimes even auroras! 💫

This week we have been doing research for the feature films and listening to great lectures by Karen Janszen and José Silerio! I have also hosted a dungeons and dragons session for the Folkis groups where the whole school mixes in different activities! 🐉

Hi! Elias in story1 here!

I’m 21 and from Katrineholm, Sörmland! I’ve always loved stories. I grew up watching the Indiana Jones films over and over again, only to recreate the events with my extensive collection of legos. As I got older, I leaned more and more towards filmmaking, which I eventually studied at @molkoms_folkhogskola . That decision finally ended me up here, in tiny Fårösund.

Fårösund might not seem like an interesting place, but life here on story academy is jam-packed with activities upon activities. We have regular film screenings in our cinema at the school (which included a LOTR trilogy marathon (extended edition!))

The school rents out the local swimming hall every Monday, which means us students get to swim for free! It’s the perfect way to chill out after diving into stories all day. There probably is a pun to be found there..

Hi! Elias in story1 here!

I’m 21 and from Katrineholm, Sörmland! I’ve always loved stories. I grew up watching the Indiana Jones films over and over again, only to recreate the events with my extensive collection of legos. As I got older, I leaned more and more towards filmmaking, which I eventually studied at @molkoms_folkhogskola . That decision finally ended me up here, in tiny Fårösund.

Fårösund might not seem like an interesting place, but life here on story academy is jam-packed with activities upon activities. We have regular film screenings in our cinema at the school (which included a LOTR trilogy marathon (extended edition!))

The school rents out the local swimming hall every Monday, which means us students get to swim for free! It’s the perfect way to chill out after diving into stories all day. There probably is a pun to be found there..

Hi! My name is Freja, I’m twenty years old, I go by she/her.

This is my third month here at Story Academy and I don’t think that I’ve ever studied this intensely in my entire life. Yet, I don’t think that I’ve ever studied something this fun either, it’s a real privilege to go to school and learn something new and interesting every day.

Like many writers I grew up as a theatre kid, but after a while I started to realize that I’ve never really liked acting that much. I’ve found myself more and more drawn towards the work behind the screen - costume, set design, directing, and most of all - writing.

My favorite thing to write is characters and character arcs, other than that I’m not exactly sure what kind of writer I am. I’m still exploring diffrent tones and genres. My dream is to write an epic fantasy series with lots of worldbuilding, but right now i have a really long way to go before reaching that goal.

This week we are working on developing stories, both for a production company that has asked us to rework a concept for a TV-series into a feature film, but also with our guest teacher @karenjanszen who helps us improve our own ideas. Also, from this week and forward, we will start writing our “scene prompts” where we get a set of characters with a goal and a situation to write a scene about individually. Each week we also analyze a script, this week we’ll discuss V for Vendetta.

We concluded our boot camp with a series of impactful events.
* Day 1: Pitch lecture by the renowned Bob Schultz, an expert in pitch training, screenwriting and producing.
* Days 2-3: Intensive pitch training with Bob Schultz.
* Day 4: Pitch presentations to production companies, producers, directors, agents, screenwriters, and actors. Huge thanks to all participants. Our students were praised as some of the best seen.
Premiere Event
The series produced by our students premiered at a packed Aspen cinema. Led by our showrunner student, Matilda Savér, and the writing team, it features six episodes directed by professional directors and DP’s alongside our talented film crew students.
Closing Celebration
The week ended with a dinner, ”The Last Supper,” followed by our annual Last Supper Party, where we welcomed alumni and celebrated our graduates. It was an extraordinary week.

Att börja på Story har varit det bästa beslut jag tagit i mitt liv. JIPPI, de vill ni allt höra va!😎👍🏼 Vi i tvåan har fått den fantastiska möjligheten att gå ut på praktik; så i fyra veckor har vi varit utspridda i landet på olika praktiker vänliga nog att ta emot oss små aspirerande manusförfattare. Något som har varit otroligt givande för oss alla. Sjukt kul att få komma ut och testa sin duglighet i det verkliga arbetslivet. Habari! I’m Melisa Mpule Okiro(my friends call me Mel) I am a second year student and this week I’m the captain of this page😁. As the curtains are soon coming down on my time here, I cannot help but look back on the day I made that decision to move to Gotland, Sweden to study screenwriting, the best decision I ever made.
As story 2, we are in the middle of our internships, working on our third pilot drafts which we have been developing together with Dr.Kira-Anne Pelican. We are also working on our fourth feature with Steve Mazur and since it’s almost May, we’re getting ready for the pitch week 😃. The weather is getting better, the future is bright, let’s see what the rest of the week has in store. See you on the next post.

Habari! I’m Melisa Mpule Okiro(my friends call me Mel) I am a second year student and this week I’m the captain of this page😁. As the curtains are soon coming down on my time here, I cannot help but look back on the day I made that decision to move to Gotland, Sweden to study screenwriting, the best decision I ever made.
As story 2, we are in the middle of our internships, working on our third pilot drafts which we have been developing together with Dr.Kira-Anne Pelican. We are also working on our fourth feature with Steve Mazur and since it’s almost May, we’re getting ready for the pitch week 😃. The weather is getting better, the future is bright, let’s see what the rest of the week has in store. See you on the next post.

I love movies but the weird thing is that, I don’t watch movies so often. Don’t get me wrong! I’m still a sucker for it, I just prefer YouTube. We have this room at school where we can go and watch films when we want to on a big screen. This week I’ve watched a few films there. It’s always fun to watch a movie in evening of the week with my friends.

The first picture is from when we watched “All over me” earlier this week. It was a pretty good movie from the nineties, with a good soundtrack.

Instagram take over with Vanda. One thing I really like about Story is that we get to write as much as we do. Such as the scripts but also shorter scenes.

One thing we do is that we get to write one scene with a few “rules” we have to follow and then read it in a table read (these scripts are anonymous so we won’t know who’s it is).

So for instance the scene may need to have secondary action. We also have a page restriction at 2-3 pages. Which make you really see what’s important to have in there and what’s not. Then learning to use these tools can be really helpful when writing scenes.

Writing these scenes are also helpful for learning to write in different ways, daring and trying out new ways to write. And it’s always a blast when we get to read these scenes and then try to guess who wrote what.

Me and a some of my classmates has also done these 3 days scripts (at least 50 pages) Sounds insane I know, but I think those who have participate can agree it wasn’t all bad and difficult. It’s a difficult challenge but it’s really fun and you learn how to write fast since you cannot think. And you also get to experiment and write scripts maybe you would usually write.

I’m Vanda and this is my first year at Story academy.
I applied to this school obviously because I love movies and I love to come up with stories.

Ever since ever since I can remember I’ve loved to come up with stories and write them down. But it took a long time for me to realize this is what I wanted to do. To begin with I wanted to become an actor but after high school I realized I wanted to write scripts. So that’s what I stared to do on my free time before applying to this school.

I like to write stories which make you feel something, usually about important subject or dark, emotional and deep things. Which is also what I tend to watch the most. And I thought I would list four of my favorites movies:
•Thirteen
•Fat girl (À ma sœur!)
•The girl, the mother and the demons (Flickan, mamman och demonerna)
•A swedish love story (En kärlekshistoria)

During this week we have started to work on giving feedback on each other’s scripts that we wrote during January. It was really fun but also difficult to have that much time compared to writing two weeks as we did last fall. When we wrote that script we didn’t have time to think too much now we had. And that made you think about it maybe a bit too much and you didn’t t have all the time in the world to do and think through all the possible improvements.

But other than that it was really fun and I really liked the story I came up with. Anyway I’m looking forward to getting some more feedback and re-writing my script for when it’s time to pitch in May.

Greta here, on my dinner-break at work and sadly doing my last post for the week. I work at a cinema, which is lovely, not only because I get to watch movies for free. When the end credits roll and it’s time to clean up all the popcorn and pop of the floors, I can’t help but look up at the screen and dream of the day I’ll see my name up there.

I think the most helpful thing I can write for my last post are the reasons I chose StoryAcademy, and I will do so in Swedish:

1. Skolan är belägen i en småstad. Man får dels väldigt mycket tid att jobba med sina manus och skriva film, men också göra filmer och liknande på fritiden.
2. Många uppgifter. Jag gillar när saker händer och vi har alltid något igång i skolan. Ibland är det att skriva en scen på 2 sidor, ibland en manusanalys men vi har alltid något att göra!
3. Lärarna är fantastiska. Vi har några riktiga namn som lärare och föreläsare. Visst, många lektioner är på zoom men man får ut lika mycket som man fått i person.
4. Man får faktiskt skriva manus! Bland det första man gör är att bara få det överstökat; skriva ett manus på två veckor. Efter det vet man att man kan och faktiskt har vad som krävs.
5. Det krävs flera olika sorters texter för att söka in, och alla blir inte antagna. Det tyckte jag fick story att verka mer professionellt.
6. Man får träffa folk med samma intresse! Det finns en skrivarlinje på skolan och en film-linje; man kommer alltid ha konversationer.
7. Folkhögskola; vi alla äter lunch tillsammans, bor nära varandra. Skolan är accepterande och bryr sig om sina elever.
8. Under tvåan skriver vi på story en serie som Film Crew faktiskt görs!!! Så man får faktiskt det man skrivit bli till film!
9. Så många fler anledningar jag inte kommer på nu, men jag har inte ångrat mitt val att gå här en enda gång.

Good morning everyone, Greta here. I’m heading back to Stockholm for Easter Break. It always makes me thinking about what I’m leaving here on Gotland; the things I’m going to be missing the coming week.

2nd pic: Improve-theatre. Every Wednesday I lead a class in improve for anyone at school who is brave enough to try it ;) My cheeks always hurts afterwards from all the laughing.

3rd pic: My internship! It was up in the northern Sweden (snow) but it was apart of my education here. I got to be a runner for two weeks on the filming of a short film and learned A LOT and got to meet some amazing people.

4th pic: The breakfast, it’s amazing.

5th pic: My amazing classmates. The pic is from our Christmas-short film and it was as crazy as it looks. They are amazing, and they know so much! We have had some really interesting conversations. And I’m going to miss having someone to talk about film with.

6th pic: School activities. Me, Thindra and Tadeo made this amazing gingerbread house (ship) for a competition at school.

7th pic: “Torture/Fear”. I just love this pic because at what other school do you have the word torture on the whiteboard?

8th pic: Podcast. We have a podcast; “It’s all about story”. This is from when me, Evert, Thindra and Alve interviewed Ulf Kvensler, the head-writer for “Vår tid är nu” and writer for “Solsidan”.

9th pic: This is from “Fårönatta” when me and some friends from other majors at our school took part in a sandcastle competition. We weren’t even close to winning, the kids beat us.

10th pic: I just like this pic. Because Fårösund is so secluded, you get really close with everyone. I’ve met some amazing people and I’m going to miss them during my break :/

Oh hello there! I’m casually sitting here, re-reading Save the cat while listening to the Scriptnotes episode with Nolan while watching an analysis video about characters in my StoryAcademy hoodie. I thought you might like a little insight in my everyday life.

My name is Greta and this is my first year here at StoryAcademy. I, compared to my film-oriented classmates, am a sucker for tv-shows. Especially crime-shows; The Bridge, You, Valhalla Murders, The Chestnut man and Bodyguard. If we’re talking movies, like my classmates always do, I am a sucker for action comedies like the best one made; Ocean’s eleven. Jokes aside, I do appreciate the people I’ve meet at this school, the film nerds ;). I’ve seen movies that truly inspired me and it’s because my classmates showed them to me because otherwise I would never ever have seen them. The people really elevates the school; because we all have different tastes in movies we all can give different perspectives. A thing one person love, another person dislikes. It shows how subjective this art form truly is.

Det betyder såklart inte att alla inte gör sitt bästa. Men i den hårda värld som är branschen så är det viktigt att få pröva vingarna först. Hitta sin stil, sin genre och sitt mål!

One cool thing I noticed when I started here at Story Academy was the fact that everyone in my class has their own source of inspiration. Although part of the fun here is to write outside of your comfort zone and explore different genres, we all tend to fall back on specific sources of inspiration.

Some take their inspiration from societal issues. Others from real-life stories, historical events or emotional tragedies. Some like tragedies and others like comedies.

Personally, I love ancient myths. I have always been fascinated by the old stories. And that’s the reason I like them, because they are old, because they have transcended time and become as close to eternal as you can get.

It’s so funny that a story some dude in a clay-hut thousands of years ago came up with is still being told and retold today. Even if you don’t like them, the same themes, archetypes and premises show up again and again to this very day!

That is why I like to use those “eternal” stories as inspiration in my work! #manusutbildningen

Although part of the fun here is to write outside of your comfort zone and explore different genres, we all tend to fall back on specific sources of inspiration.

Some take their inspiration from societal issues. Others from real-life stories, historical events or emotional tragedies. Some like tragedies and others like comedies.

Personally, I love ancient myths. I have always been fascinated by the old stories. And that’s the reason I like them, because they are old, because they have transcended time and become as close to eternal as you can get.

It’s so funny that a story some dude in a clay-hut thousands of years ago came up with is still being told and retold today. Even if you don’t like them, the same themes, archetypes and premises show up again and again to this very day!

That is why I like to use those “eternal” stories as inspiration in my work! #manusutbildningen
